Natalia

helo natalia,

vvvv does not run on linux natively. the only way of running it on linux is via a virtual windows-instance.

probably one of those threads helps:

if that does not work you may be interested in https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pure_Data

and here some info for vvvv on mac:

@all:
anyone up for starting a simple/clean wiki-page for using vvvv via virtual-windows on mac and linux?

I found that wine supports only .net 2, not 3.5sp1 or 4, and no workaround seems to be possible.

Big problem, I guess.

P.S. Which vvvv release needs .net 2?

Bye

@h99:

  • vvvversions >=16 use .net2
  • vvvversions >=24 use .net3.5 SP1
  • vvvversions >=27 use .net4

I’ve found directx 9.0c and .net 2.0, 3.0 and 3.5., still missin’ VC++ runtime 20xx.
All should be tested, but seems that dirX9 and .net 2 are ok.
I’m workin’ on Ubuntu 11.04.
Let’s go ahead.

Within Wine, finally got vvvv beta16 to start, with this log on tty:

Everything you know is wrong
  physical : in use= 19,  total =   2097152 kb,  avail =   2097152 kb
   virtual : in use=  0,  total =   2097024 kb,  avail =   2096960 kb
    paging : in use=  0,  total =   4194304 kb,  avail =   4194304 kb

and no plugin, saying it’s missing .net2, which instead is there.

I still haven’t found a way to install .net3. Have a error with servicemodelreg.exe I can’t (still, hopefully) fix.

I’ve also tried out PlayonLinux, which has a .net4 distro: if I run crack from beta27 I get all 4 green boxes, but when starting vvvv it says me .net4 is not installed.

I’ll try Virtualbox too, one of these days.

Someone any ideas about wine?

mkay, b27 reports wrongly on startup. it actually checks for .net3.5 SP1. so please try with the latest alpha (which has this fixed).

Ah yesss… I have to say I saw somewhere a “POL_install_dotnet40”, but now can’t find it anymore; probably was just oversized hope. I’ve installed a huge bunch of stuff alltogether. Infact there’s a POL_install_dotnet11 or 20 or 30 or 35, so here’s why

crack from beta27 put a green box on .net4.

Then we have some more clues, which I cannot understand completely. I saved this log -which didn’t pop out w/ beta27- of beta27.1 run, using Wine.

Please read it: maybe it’s possible to install manually something.

Ciao

vvvv .exe-exception-2012-01-29_beta27.1_onwine.txt (9.5 kB)

yes, crack.exe of b27 checks for .net4, but vvvv.exe itself wrongly checks for .net3.5SP1. therefore b27 needs both .net3.5SP1 and .net4 installed. vvvv.exe of b27.1 has this fixed.

the exception does not help, it is just points to a generic .net problem.

Excepted for beta16 - and anyways vvvv can’t find .net2, which is there, so we’re going to have problems with plugins and this is what TTY says at start

I can’t go further the splash screen. Support for >.net2 on Wine is (still) rated as garbage, and installing stuff from inside PlayOnLinux doesn’t solve anything.
Virtualbox asks, at a certain point, for your WinXX install CD: didn’t tried, but I guess there will be, first of all, performance issues to fight with, and someone experienced it, as I’ve read somewhere in the vvvvorums.

At the moment I don’t really know what else I should try. Ideas anyone? Guess no…

Dear linux and mac people: please accept once and for all that vvvv is a windows application which is best run under (you guessed it…) Windows!
No matter how hard you try with emulation, VMs or any other technique - Windows is still going to be first choice to run vvvv.

Though I’m happy too that there’s finally - finally… it’s here a long time now - something very good for Windows, I think that “sharing” vvvv could make vvvv even better.

Moreover I moved after a New Vvvv from joreg, since I hoped that a “normal” Linux user would be able to install vvvv and play with it.

And to say it all, I really would like to have this piece of software running on my Natty.

Respectfully,

Best Wishes.

Dear h99,

I truly hope that your receiption of my post was not disrespectful, because it was not meant that way! It’s just that several of vvvv’s core technologies are heavily windows dependant starting with .NET (one could argue it could be replaced with mono), it’s Delphi legacy, heavy DirectX dependance and then some…

So to sum it up: from my point of view it’s highly unlikely that it’ll run under any *nix OS anytime soon.

Best,
rifle cat

I really didn’t felt hurt by your post, just tried to be kind. You know it’s easy to start a flame, which I absolutely wanna avoid!

Then, what you say is right, especially about .net, which is, right now and for me, the big obstacle to smash down. I had a deep journey in Win-only-stuff, learning more on Win itself, and had a stunning overview of huge issues people fight with, to find good workarounds etc, on other OSes.
I tried mono too, but I still get nothing back.

Moreover I could probably be not the best man to try this out.

Said this, I pointed to joreg post just because if himself asks for such a try, then…

Yours again.

Ahh, very good. Now when I look at that first post of mine i find it kind of sloppy in its tone, but it was ofcourse not meant that way and I’m happy to hear that you did not take it that way.

Also i absolutely agree with you in that having vvvv or a similar tool on *nix systems would be really nice.
