Information about BASF Hauptversammlung 2004-2005

I have seen the picture in the gallery and it is great. I have a project with a panoramic display and capture source (video with Blackmagic SDI card and graphic).

So I have any questions :

  • what graphic card did you used?
  • did you work in multi render configuration or with only one renderer ?
  • did you have any problems with frame rate ?
  • to display video and graphics in the same time did you used capture cards and which one did you used?
  • what was the version of vvvv (8 or 9) ?

thanks a lot

  • what graphic card did you used?
we used a matrox parhelia with 3 heads in horizontal span mode.

  • did you work in multi render configuration or with only one renderer ?
    one renderer.

  • did you have any problems with frame rate ?
yes. the parhelia is a rather slow card. video playback or live video input always causes framerate problems.

  • to display video and graphics in the same time did you used capture cards and which one did you used?
we used a holo3d II by immersive (now discontinued) since it was the only card we found that did deinterlacing in hardware. still would not recommend that card. picture quality via sdi-input was bad! how are you thinking to deinterlace? the blackmagic card will not do that for you. right?

  • what was the version of vvvv (8 or 9) ?
back then it was an 8 version with some 9 features. especiallly the viewport thing was needed.

Video cards with deinterlace process are too much expensive for us. Blackmagic cards have delay but we hope that distance between public and speakers will compense this delay.

good luck. and tell us your results.
and who will do the deinterlacing?

some more issues to add after joregs reply:

in principle the holo3d looked like a great and flexible card. with the last released drivers of the holo3d we did not find a setting where we was able to set the chroma delay to a suitable value. the image always ended up with color seams when high contrasting colors were shown. this seemed to be a known problem of the holo3d and the developers gave up on that issue.

hmm. delay was a big issue for us, as the cameras, video mixers and especially the projectors added to the delay. make sure you take all that into account.

and i’ll move that topic to “patching questions” this is only for ideas about future projects…

what i thinks about delay

i work with professionnal materials. often i use Sony DXCD30/35 camera and Sony DFS700 , JVC KM3000, or Sony BVS3200 video mixer and Barco,Christie videoprojectors.

for the camera there is no delay.

the first video mixer is digital. i call Sony support for technical information and they tell me there is one line delay without 3d effect and 1 frame delay with 3d effect. for the two another mixers there is no dealy because they are analog.
with some analog mixer (like Panasonic WJMX50 or 70) you have a delay because they integrate a TBC (Time Base Corrector-it allows to synchronize the input).

it real that videoprejctors add delay like one to three frame delay. it depends of the internal treatment.

for information :
do you know Catalyst ?
website
it used the black magic SDI card.

… to continue this short trip to professional video- and broadcastequipment

A different way to insert a HighQuality video window into a VVVV-generated background is of course the use of graphics switcher systems like the Barco Folsom ScreenPro / ScreenProPlus / Encore.
These graphics switcher are able to switch/dissolve seamless between different sources on HighResolution level (up to 2048x1080). They are also able to insert one source as a “PIP” into a other source. These hardware solutions also do the deinterlacing of the SD video sources.

The video quality of the inserted image (for example videocamera) using these hardware solutions is (thats at least my experience) much higher than using a combination of VVVV and a video capture card - of course the cost of such a system are also much higher than “simply using a capture card”.

The combination of VVVV and a Barco Folsom Encore was succesfully used during a show for KonicaMinolta some weeks ago. You might find a short description of the show in the Galeria shortly.

Markus

it is the same problem with Barco Encore. I used it and i have seen a delay on video.
i have search in the documentation see page 18:
“Low video delay — less than 3 input fields”

right - of course there is also some video delay with the Barco Encore - i have not said there is none.

There must be some videodelay as soon as you do deinterlacing, because you have to “wait” for the frames.

But I think, if you make sure that there are almost no additional sources for video delay in your signal chain, these three fields are no problem at all (especially in bigger locations where the “natural” audio delay is bigger than the video delay for most of the audience).

Looking at all aspects of image quality, I personally have not seen a better solution for integrating IMAG into a HighRes, softedged projection than the Barco Encore.

By the way - where are you located and where are working - it seems that we are having very similar backgrounds.

Markus

it is true that Barco encore is the most powerful system.

do you have create a geometry correction for the projecion on the sphere ?

jes. of course. else the projection would not have been seemless.

do you have use grid node ?
