Ati or nvidia?

Hi!
i’m preparing a new computer to run vvvv and i have two cards in mind.

  1. Asus / ati / HD 4850 / 1Gb / 2xDVI
  2. Gigabyte / NVIDIA / GTS 250 / 1Gb / 2xDVI

what would you sugest?

btw. is it possible to put a pair of both cards in cross/sli mode since i’ll take one pair?

It is difficult to choose one. Personally i like nvidia, and i have a pair of 9800gtx in sli.
anyway there is the new 5000series of ATI (for example the ATI5870, the most powerful videocard of the world).

here is a list of features of the 2 cards (nvidia vs ati5000series):

-NVIDIA

  • probably better antialiasing
  • 3dstereo drivers for use with 3d monitors or with 3dvision by nvidia
  • some shaders don’t go with ATI (for example displace)

-ATI

  • dx11
  • more power
  • eyefinity technology (useful for multimonitor, with 3 or 6 monitors in the same card)

anyway i’m waiting that my computer becomes old (or that i gain some money) to buy the new ati graphic card, search on youtube ati5870 for an example of the superpower of this monster.

another thing,
by my experience vvvv dosen’t take advantage of sli/crossfire configuration, or at least i don’t see it

well yes, HD 5870 is a great piece of hardware but i’m limited with budget.

i didnt know that vvvv is not using sli configuration… well that may change my decision about mobo. what kind of motherboard do you use for sli mode?

what kind of motherboard do you use for sli mode?

i have an asus strikerII extreme, with the nforce chipset, with a intel quadcore, and 4gb of ddr3 ram.
But if i should buy a new computer now, there is some mobo (for intel i5 or i7) that support both sli and crossfire

ahem… a little offtopic:

i don’t trust ASUS mainboards anymore. had two broken just right after the warranty expired.
heard similar things about their notebooks.

after some googling and 5xxx series bug in my head i’ve managed to make a configuration with two HD5750 cards, i5 processor and crossfire mobo (GB P55-UD4 x16x8 PCIe) with the same budget :)

@kalle: i have that motherboard (and for now i’m really happy of this) and i have an asus laptop (g2s) and i never had problems except a little problem with the graphic card of the notebook, but they changed me the bugged piece and now all goes well.

that eyefinity looks nice. so eyefiniy x triplehead to go=a lot

allthought that 5870 it’s the winner (for now) in power, whats better for NVIDIA or ATI ? I think there are more problems reported in the forum with ATI than NVIDIA, but maybe im wrong.

I have a new GTS 250, and coming from an x3100, the antialising its like a new world for me.

nVidia + iCore 7

i’m using a phenom II on a gigabyte-mainboard and an ati 4890 as development machine, no problems whatsoever. vj’ing on an old hp compaq 9420 (coreduo and ati x1600), works as well. the only vvvv-related problems in choosing between ati and nvidia imo are some shaders not supported by both. i had those when i tried the newer notebook of my sister with a geforce 9600gt-chip.
