X. objects and lighting: no material?

anyone has an idea why my .x objects are appearing as black objects when loaded into the PhongDirectionalHelp patch (lighting is not working, just on the example objects) ? i am using wings 3d and converting via .3ds or .obj files to the .x format with AccuTrans 3D. anything i have to take care about when creating the models/objects?

perhaps a dumb Question:
when the lighting vector is 0;0;0 the light might be inside your object.
did you try to connect a Vector (3d) Join and move the light source?
