Best camera for tracking

ok, i know it has been discussed a few times already but I am not sure what would be the best solution for me. i am searching a camera for movement detection at night (in a range between 1 - 5 meters) so the cam should be able to process ir light and filter out “normal” light (a hack would also be ok).

but there are so many options:

  • use the PHILIPS Webcam SPC 900NC MrBenefit mentioned
  • buy a expensive firewire cam like the Unibrain Fire-i™ Digital Board
  • buy a analog cam and a videocrapper (i don’t know if that is the right option because i need 2 cams)

so i really don’t know what to do - I prefer the cheapest solution because I have to pay all for myself.

and there is another problem - the movement in the picture should trigger some light tubes (“leuchtstoffröhren”) but the the light from that tubes would also generate triggers of movement (and they shouldn’t - only movement should gen a trigger), thats the main reason why i want to use ir light but to avoid that effect (or does anybody know a software solution). but i am not sure how much ir light the light tubes will emit for them self - anybody knows something more about that?

best regards andreas

yes ;)

no. usb webcams are too slow and not very sensitive
  • buy a expensive firewire cam like the Unibrain Fire-i™ Digital Board
    its expensive. but its fast.
  • buy a analog cam and a videocrapper (i don’t know if that is the right option because i need 2 cams)

i always propose this version. look up security cameras (they dont have IR blocking filters) on ebay and a framegrabber card that has not only 4 BNC jacks (lots of these out there)
but also more than one capture chip on it. it will enable you to process more than one camera image at the same time.

look if you can find a capture board with multiple BT878 chips on it. for the BT878 theres a fast opensource WDM driver available
here: http://btwincap.sourceforge.net/
its the fastest and cheapest solution.

aaaa-ha. firewire is off the table. ;)

not really a problem. you will need an IR pass filter in front of the camera lenses (buy a sheet of LEE #87 filter, its for photograpy) and IR illumination for the room. some types of neon light tubes just dont emit IR light, so they wont bee seen by the cams… video projector images dont have ir light in them too ;)
just ask the manufacturer about the spectrum…
