i dont use any effects or filters, such blur or glow, and particle or forward rendering.
only this trick is halo(with gaussian spread). very simple but beautiful, right? :)
the forward rendering particle blur-size trick is exactly what you described. forward rendering in a given scope mostly means that a given effect is achieved directly in scene on a single pass (so in vvvvenglish directly on object rendering layers connected to 1 renderer).
