So,

we have a candidate for the upcoming 2021.4 release. It includes the latest updates for videoplayback and also a new thing called editor extensions, which are little tools to extend the vvvv editor. The best thing about them: Those are just patches as well, so it is really easy to make your own.

Next up: We're now fixing a few more buggers that showed up in the release candidate before we'll be releasing 2021.4 hopefully within this month. Then it's time to start planning the next releases and give you an update on the roadmap.

Also coming up: The November meetup on the 23rd!

Here are some new bits for you to try:

And the following nugets got updated:

In other surprise news: A new vvvv book is out in Japan that also covers vvvv gamma.

The gyrovagues were wandering, marginal and undisciplined monks, outsiders of the community and without a fixed residence; they lived off the charity and hospitality of others.

Lorenzo de Medici was a poet, patron, statesman, philosopher and seducer. He sought aesthetic enjoyment and contemplation rather than action.

It is unlikely that they coincided; neither in time nor in space.

Here goes!

Available in experimental form since a while already, vvvv gamma finally will ship proper stable video playback options with upcoming 2021.4. So here is what we've got for you:

For both Skia and Stride - Something for everyone!

Video files

Typing "video" in the nodebrowser shows the VL.Video.MediaFoundation nuget. Reference it to get these nodes for video playback:

  • VideoPlayer (Stride): returns a texture for VL.Stride
  • VideoPlayer (Skia): returns an image for VL.Skia

Both play the same wide range of containers and formats and some more can be added by installing the Mediafoundation codec pack.

Image Sequences

For the playback of image sequences, find the following nodes shipping with the respective nugets:

  • ImagePlayer (Stride) and ImagePlayer (FrameBased Stride) for VL.Stride
  • ImagePlayer (Skia) and ImagePlayer (FrameBased Skia) for VL.Skia

Check their help patches for details on supported formats and some more fine-print.

For arguments regarding when to use the VideoPlayer vs. the ImagePlayers nodes, see the new chapter on video playback in the gray book.

Network synchronization

Yes, please! Using the ImagePlayer nodes, vvvv also offers to have them play in sync on multiple PCs.

Available for testing now in latest 2021.4 previews.

Aaaahoi!

The single biggest news this month: The FUSE team had their preview release party and people are since fusing aways like there's no tomorrow. Check it out, you don't want to be the last one who joins the hype! Any questions? Get them answered in the shiny new dedicated FUSE section of the forum.

In addition, we had two regular vvvv meetups which you should watch if you don't want to miss out on the latest shenanigans: meetup 13 and meetup 14.

And a secret tip: dottore giving an update on the status of the VL.Kairos project.

How are things regarding the upcoming 2021.4 release? Good, glad you ask! We've just recently merged the promised Settings UI, which is actually bigger news than what meets the eye. We'll have to talk about this separately... TextureFX have recently left the experimental stage and so have the Video- and TexturePlayers that still have an announcement pending. But really, latest 2021.4 previews already have all of this in for you to test. And still a few more things to come...

Empty shop windows are boring. Especially in good locations, they are also unused presentation areas that can offer local businesses a valuable temporary stage.

The heart of the installation is a voluminous arrangement of controllable LED lights. Viewers can design individual messages using their smartphones and send them directly to the system. A jury regularly selects young companies and startups to be featured in the shop windows.

As soon as a passer-by stands on a marked point, the complex arrangement of lamps and light unravels for the viewer and an interactive ticker becomes legible. Via QR code and smartphone, own messages and crazy light effects can be controlled in the shop window.
