Interactive audio-visual map of the Human Genome at Ars Electronica 2013

Over the course of 5 days hundreds of visitor interactions with a multi user
touch screen interface were recorded. From a scientific point of view, the
interface allowed the exploration of the human genome, which was visualized
in a circular layout, in real time and 3d. This interface is developed since
2010 with the aim to provide an innovative working tool for bio informatics,
genomics and micro biology.

For the Ars Electronica exhibition an experimental auditive dimension was
added to the interface: touching and thereby activating the genes produced a
sound which was unique for each one of the about 24000 genes. The sound was
a complicated result of processing field recording samples from all around
the world with the different data levels of the associated genes. In
addition, lines showed up between the genes on the circular visualization,
indicating interactions between genes or to say it correctly, interactions
between the resulting proteins and other gene products. All genome
interactions in a whole build the so called Interactome. We count about
250000 possible genome interactions.

The pattern of the genes, the sound and the lines of the Interactome build
up a complex relationship between different layers of high dimensional data.
The users, without knowing it, became anonymous probands for evaluating the
effectiveness of the audio-visual interface in terms of data-correlation and
spatial adaption time for the brain.
