The new website

statement website

frank 06/10/10 - 12:35

Hi,

first of all I want to congratulate for the new website. Awesome!
And secondly, I'd thought might be good to have sort of collective thread for new website.

I just looked around and some first impressions:

  • Its hard to read topics of forum as its spacing is quite big and somehow is readability disturbed by nearby tag boxes.
  • I like the tags.
  • Click toggle, double click is confusing for me. May be its in the beginning only.
  • I like the like buttons.
  • Contributions has a nice style.
  • Where is the difference between Vvvv thumbnail (upper left) and menu item vvvv>home?
  • I like vimeo, flickr and delicious
  • Whats relations at posting a thread site?

you mean on the main forum listing page, ja?

  • Click toggle, double click is confusing for me. May be its in the beginning only.

ja, we had that during betaphase..some people would expect a single click to solo a tag as they wouldn't expect to be able to multi-select tags. if you get the idea of multi-selections of tags it feels quite natural that a click toggles a tags selection. and a hard press (doubleclick) solos a tag.

  • Where is the difference between Vvvv thumbnail (upper left) and menu item vvvv>home?

klicking the vvvv-logo in the upper left you reach the main vvvv-portal site usually interesting for first time visitors / non-registered users. as soon as you're registered you'd set your bookmarks to the home/activities page and take that as your entry-point to the site giving you an overview of what has changed since your last visit

  • Whats relations at posting a thread site?

you can relate forum posts to nodes. if you start a forum topic from a nodes reference page by clicking "start a forum thread about this node" that new thread will be automatically related to this node, means it will be listed on the nodereference page. also you can manually relate a noderef-page to a thread by just typing a node-name in the autocomplete input field..

wow, smart. can we please get an overview of all new features?

Hey patrick,
a good starting point is the website section in the documentation. But perhaps we can compile a list of the new features.

gude vvvvebmaster,
a compilation would be very much appreciated!

edith sez: maybe it's the mobile device rendering but, how to bookmark a forum thread? speaking of mobile device html rendering-a-ding, the shoutbox loses it's send button after completely loading any page (mobile safari on iOS 3.1.2). i am happy to help testing more on this platform as it occurs often to me, needing access to yourstrulydotorg even though the vvvv-pc has no internet access ...

danke fein!

ai patrick, the website section is exactly meant to provide an overview of all new features. it wouldn't make sense to me to compile another list. everything (i haven't forgotten about) is already there.

i'd like to point out my favorite though: see Request Review as explained on the bottom of About the Documentation

ok, makes sense. i couldn't deny the lazyness within my request. so how 'bout mobile devices then?

@joreg: Cool features. Sounds like you guys put a lot of Gehirnschmalz in it.

yay danks,...you know, we tried..let's see how it all works out..

Mmmh, actually I dont like this collapsed text stuff in a thread. Needed some time to recognise it and only if you are eager enough to read everything. Isnt it possible to visualise, that its collapsed. Like with plus/minus or arrows. May be answer is marked in different color.
I prefer to have a quick overview of all texts. And a thread split in two or more sites isnt my favour.
But now Im quiet. I dont wanna puit your awesome work into bad light.

Hi frank and kalle,

just for clarification: you'd like all posts of a thread on one page (even if the thread has a lot of posts), and also you don't like only the answer being shown for a thread that has solutions. Is that right?

@frank: of course you may write as many suggestions as you like, we're always looking to improve the site, so just go ahead. If you suggest stuff that many community members like, it's quite probable that you'll see it implemented in the future.

Thanks for your feedback up to now.

hola
seems like th eimage button in the toolbar doesn t work...

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 16/07/2010 - 16:35

img should be working again now. thanks.

i'm also leaning toward frank and kalle regarding the collapsed thread, solution only view.

maybe it's possible to insert a link "jump to solution" or something like that after the first post, so the quick solution lookup function doesn't get lost, but the thread integrity/flow is preserved, also? you could also give solution-tagged post a light green background for visual differentiation.
failing that, maybe a preference setting to switch it off?

btw, what happens if more than one answer is marked solution? never seen that so far, i think.

is it only me or are there others experiencing this as well?

we have now changed the bevahiour in a way that you can show all answers very quickly via javascript. if you do so, the resolving answers will be tinted in green. what do you think?

looks grrreat :-)

while we're in the website thread, what happened to woei's proposal during the beta period of a new "clear list" button? with all the activity now it would come in handy :-)

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 19/07/2010 - 18:35

it's on our "bonus" list of features to implement in a next phase. can't promise when that will be though.

+1 for "clear list"

i tried this on a mobile android browser and it works just like on windows/firefox: topright, just slightly below a pages title there is a button add bookmark. it is only ~10% visible but is still there and clickable. on mouse-devices a mouseover shows the buttons 100% so they are easier to find, but it still should work on you mobile. or are you facing other troubles?

@vvvvebmaster: New collapse thing is much better. Thanks.

I like this linking to node-reference option, but its quite unhandy to get correct node name, which is going to direct to reference page. Isnt it possible to have a sort of pull down menu or autofill to get quickly your nodename. I know its not an easy part, but could be soooo useful and convenient. (May be more to be a xmas wish....;)

nice idea.. for now i figured that the best way to link a node is to write its name like:

Renderer (EX9)

and then select the whole nodename and press the node link button:

Renderer (EX9)

@frank: I think this would be a great addition to our "things to optimize in future" list. Can't promise anything, but sounds like a real useful function to me.

hhhm the list would be quite long; means lot of data.

loading the new node reference is no fun via UMTS.

perhaps if you press CTRL-F1 on a selected node in vvvv, it's name gets copied to the clipboard.
kind of analog to ALT-F1

doesn't work but, more important there seems to be no send button for the shoutbox.

@kalle: Indeed that wouldnt be great. May be more in the google direction: while you type in letters it suggests words. Its somehow AJAX driven, and only traffic if needed. I bet there are some scripts flying around there.

edit: just stumbled over one: http://digitarald.de/project/autocompleter/

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 26/07/2010 - 12:55

frank: that is definately possible but as I said, something for our todo list.

question: is it by design that, when getting an email about a thread subscription, that you get the first post of the thread written in the mail, and not the first unread/new post?

I got a question about the RSS feeds here. Subscribing to http://vvvv.org/home/activities/feed you get all activities. Say, I'm keen on reading the Forum activities, but I don't care for the shoutbox … what feed do I subscribe to? Another question, I really fancy article previews (summaries? excerpts?) for the RSS feed, not a redirect to the originary website.

Opinions?

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 21/08/2010 - 10:58

patrick: two possibilities.

  1. only select the forum tag, then you should be able to subscribe a list of forum activities
  2. go to the forum and subscribe the forum feed. additionally you can select tags here as well and only subscribe to, say, open bug reports.

If that doesn't work, let me know.

thx vvvvebmaster, works as advertised! alas, the rss feeds only a title and a link to continue reading the 'article' on the website, there is no summary or excerpt shown. thus it's not possible to evaluate whether the article is of interest or not … i'd love to see this improved!

I think the varying headers take too much attention and space. Making it more compact (maybe just black with the logo) would increase readability and make it easier to focus on the information on the site.

one feature request:

is it possible to insert the latest post or complete thread into the subscription mails?

Eben, sebl. That kinda kicks in my suggestion to provide a summary/full first post of a forum thread in the RSS feed.

Bitte lieber vvvvebmaster … danke :)

and also chimes with my post from 18/08
btw removed the solution flag from this one post, since there's so many with good info/solutions in here..

i like the new vvvvebsite a lot - good work!

one very, very small thing: the feed for screenshots only has links, but it would be nicer with inlined images (i want to watch the great work by the vvvv community directly through an rss reader)
i know there are millions of more important things, so i can apply this change myself if someone dares to grant me the access rights ;p

yeah, dEp's post is an addition to

what's the use of an rss feed if there's nothing to read but the title?

good morning btw!

RSS :/

I have changed the Q&A feed as well as the Blog feed to display the whole entry in the feed. It isn't very well formatted though and the images and extra content show up sort of awkward. I will put in some work sometime in the near future, but for now I hope your needs are satisfied. Let me know what you think.

link | Flag this reply as a solution. io (translator) 18/11/2010 - 11:16

Hi
I have tried the new Display Suite and it can be a quick alternative to nodes/views overrides, and panels. Not really a purists' choice but it can come handy in this situations.

He vvvvebmasta, thx for your work on the RSS feeds, they are much more usable this way! Any further work is of course appreciated.

BTW, it seems there is no way to scroll my bookmarks in the bookmarks shade; ie. when you have more than can be displayed in one row, the rest isn't visible. Irritating … Do you see a way to fix this?

Thx and frohes Nois 2011!

nice new website, still getting the hang of it.
is http://vvvv.org/node/add/release-note really supposed to be public? or is it talking about all kinds of release notes, not just the core ones?

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 10/03/2011 - 22:04

following up your requests for better rss support this is to let you know that I've cleaned up the blog and forum rss feeds and made the activity feed more useful. let me know if you still have wishes.

I'd like to see a shout tag button @ vvvv » Home » Activities like in the Blog section.

link | Flag this reply as a solution. sapo (translator) 05/03/2012 - 18:17

just to add 2 cents, on ie9, the main menu is flickering and disappearing, i think it's somehow linked to the prev/next buttons of the screenshots.

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 06/03/2012 - 20:34

@desaxismundi: due to technical reasons I can't add a shout button. The only thing that will work is excluding shouts altogether from the activities. we're discussing this at the moment so something might change in this list but it might also stay the way it is.

@sapo: I'll check this as soon as I have a PC with ie9 near me. does the main menu not flicker if you're not on the startpage? I know this isn't a real solution, but of course we recommend using firefox or chrome :)

ah, and perhaps it's possiple or still performant to make the vvvv.org/home/activities entry-length longer - perhaps 40 instead of 20 entries? best would be a lazy-load thingy imo.

it's because i think most people hang around on this starting page and some topics get kinda lost if they move too fast to the second page.

link | Flag this reply as a solution. dave (admin) 10/03/2012 - 16:57

sebl, we changed that, see if it suits your needs.

ouh, feelin honoured - yes, i think that's better now, thanks

another usability-one: can we please have the search results sorted by thread (not by post like now)
