IRC is short for Internet Relay Chat. It is a rather old chat-network which still makes much sense for larger groups of people to communicate with each other instead of only using one-to-one instant messaging.
IRC runs on different server-networks (EFnet, IRCnet, Undernet, freenode...) which are not connected with each other. Our channel ##vvvv is on freenode. Connecting to irc.freenode.net will lead you to the same ##vvvv channel. But beware: sometimes heavy net-loads cause net-splits resulting in people logged in to different servers not seeing each other. Usually this is only a temporal problem.
If you don't have an IRC client your best choice probably is the webbased interface provided by freenode.net:
Join ##vvvv via webchat
Simply choose a nickname, fill out the captcha and hit connect.
Alternatively you may want to tryhttps://irccloud.com.
You can basically also connect to ##vvvv using the chat demo patch in vvvv. Just press CTRL+F1 to open the chat window. Follow the instructions in there.
Multiprotocol instant messaging clients like the following also have IRC functionality:
Those combine irc-chat with a lot of popular instant messangers. Using one of these you only need one program to communicate via msn, aim, irc, icq...
There is also tons of dedicated irc software out there:
after installation click this link:irc://irc.freenode.net/ and type: /join ##vvvv
