A metronome quietly ticks in the corner of the room.

Drawing on the tiny impact of each tick, this installation tries to draw the maximum possible attention to each solitary moment. The sound is amplified and echoes around the room. A self-generating pattern hovering above the metronome explodes across the walls. Each tick is noticed.

This work attempts to highlight the near-imperceptibility of time, as a concept which can only be viewed from the present moment. It was inspired by Molly Pearson's poem 'Picture This' and displayed at the AlphaVille festival of post-digital culture in London, 2011.

The work is composed of a number of interacting components:

  • A microphone listens endlessly to the ticking of a metronome
  • A software program monitors the signal intently, waiting for audible ticks
  • A self-generating software pattern whirls around waiting for direction, and when a tick is detected, it explodes
  • A multi-projector, homographic display is installed, uniting the light of the pattern across the geometry of the corner of the room
  • A mixer feeds the live sound from the microphone back out through a PA, causing amplification and reverberation around the room
